Coach Notes (U6–U8 Discovery Phase)
Focus: dribbling, movement, fun, confidence.
Zero tactics: no formations or positions.
Short instructions: 10–15 seconds max at a time.
Lots of touches: no lines, no laps, no long lectures.
Play first: kids learn through doing, not listening.
Equal playing time: rotate frequently and fairly.
UYSA Development Characteristics (U6–U8)
Cognitive: short attention spans, learn by imitation, prefer simple games and stories.
Physical: limited coordination, quick bursts of energy, need frequent changes of activity.
Social/Emotional: sensitive to feedback, need encouragement and fun success moments.
Learning Style: best learning is “guided discovery” — asking questions and letting them try.
Play–Practice–Play (UYSA Recommended)
Arrival Play (5 minutes): free dribbling, tag games, “show me your favorite move.”
Play 1 (6–8 minutes): simple 1v1 or 2v2 game with very simple rules.
Practice (12–15 minutes): 1–2 short ball-mastery or dribbling activities.
Play 2 (10–12 minutes): 3v3 or 4v4 game, minimal stoppages, let them play.
Cool Down: high-fives, name one thing they did well, team cheer.

Coaches can use this table as a quick reference, then scroll down to see the detailed ideas for each week.
Week 1 — Intro & Ball Control (Surfaces of the Foot)
Key Cues: “Tiny touches,” “Keep it close,” “Try both feet.”
Session Idea:
• Arrival Play: free dribble in a small grid.
• Activity 1 – Red Light / Green Light: players dribble and stop on coach command using sole, inside, or outside of foot.
• Activity 2 – Toe Tap Challenge: players see how many toe taps they can do in 20 seconds, repeat a few times.
• Activity 3 – Dribble through Gates: lots of small cone “gates” — players dribble through as many as they can.
• Play – 3v3 or 4v4: small goals, no goalkeepers, minimal coaching interruptions.
Week 2 — Ball Control (Both Feet)
Key Cues: “Left-right-left-right,” “Soft touches,” “Eyes up sometimes.”
Session Idea:
• Arrival Play: dribble freely and “freeze” on coach call with ball under sole.
• Activity 1 – Inside/Outside Touches: players dribble in lanes practicing inside–inside and outside–outside touches with each foot.
• Activity 2 – Gates with Foot Choice: dribble through gates; coach calls “left” or “right” and players must use that foot to go through next gate.
• Activity 3 – Shadow Dribble: in pairs, one leads and one copies their dribbling moves.
• Play – 3v3 or 4v4: encourage using both feet but keep it fun and positive.
Week 3 — Ball Control (Forward Dribbling & Stopping)
Key Cues: “Push… stop,” “Sole on top,” “Control the ball.”
Session Idea:
• Arrival Play: dribble to colored cones and stop the ball on top.
• Activity 1 – Dribble & Stop Races: players dribble to a line and must control the ball on coach whistle using the sole.
• Activity 2 – Traffic Jam: players dribble in a grid, changing speed, stopping on command, avoiding collisions.
• Activity 3 – 1v1 To The Line: attacker tries to dribble and stop the ball on end line while defender chases from behind or side.
• Play – 4v4: normal play; reward players who can control the ball before shooting or changing direction.
Week 4 — Ball Control (Moving Left & Right)
Key Cues: “Side to side,” “Roll it,” “Find space.”
Session Idea:
• Arrival Play: kids dribble any direction and try to avoid others by moving left/right.
• Activity 1 – Sole Rolls: roll the ball across body with sole (right-to-left, left-to-right).
• Activity 2 – Sideways Highway: lanes set up across the field; players dribble left or right through lanes instead of just forward.
• Activity 3 – Sharks & Minnows (Side Escape): “Minnows” dribble, “Sharks” tag by touching ball — players can escape by changing direction sideways.
• Play – 3v3 or 4v4: encourage players to move sideways to get away from pressure.
Week 5 — Small-Scale Attacking: Shooting
Key Cues: “Aim with the inside,” “Plant foot next to the ball,” “Follow through.”
Session Idea:
• Arrival Play: free shooting at small goals or cones.
• Activity 1 – Hit the Cone: players try to knock over cones in a target zone using inside of foot.
• Activity 2 – 1v1 to Mini Goals: attacker dribbles to shoot on one of two mini goals; defender tries to block shot.
• Activity 3 – Treasure Hunt Shooting: players shoot balls into “treasure” zones marked by cones or hoops.
• Play – 4v4: celebrate any attempt to shoot, not just the goals.
Week 6 — Small-Scale Attacking: Shooting & Simple Tricks
Key Cues: “Be brave,” “Try your move,” “Attack space.”
Session Idea:
• Arrival Play: dribble in grid and practice one favorite trick (e.g., step-over).
• Activity 1 – Simple Tricks: demonstrate step-over, scissors, or pull-back; kids copy and experiment.
• Activity 2 – 1v1 Trick & Shoot: attacker must try 1 move before shooting on goal; defender gives light pressure.
• Activity 3 – 3-Goal Game: 2 teams, 3 small goals; players choose which goal to attack, encouraging decision making.
• Play – 3v3 / 4v4: praise players for trying moves, not just for scoring.
Week 7 — Defense: Protecting the Ball
Key Cues: “Body between ball and defender,” “Sideways stance,” “Keep ball close.”
Session Idea:
• Arrival Play: each player with a ball, shielding from a partner who gently tries to touch it.
• Activity 1 – Shielding Circle: in pairs, one has ball, one tries to win it; switch roles often.
• Activity 2 – 1v1 Shoulder Up: attacker shields, defender tries to poke ball away but with control and safety.
• Activity 3 – Steal the Bacon (Small Groups): players race to a ball and must shield it back over their line.
• Play – 4v4: highlight players who protect the ball before passing or moving.
Week 8 — Defense: Protecting the Goal
Key Cues: “Stay between them and the goal,” “Small steps,” “Don’t dive in.”
Session Idea:
• Arrival Play: simple 1v1 lane game with a small goal at the end.

• Activity 2 – Chase Down: attacker starts ahead, defender chases to slow them down before goal line.
• Activity 3 – 3v3 Defend the Cone: one cone as “goal”; defenders must protect it by staying in between.
• Play – 4v4: praise good positioning and effort, not just tackles.

Key Cues: “Look first,” “Pass to feet,” “Turn into space.”
Session Idea:
• Arrival Play: pairs pass back and forth in a small area.
• Activity 1 – Gate Passing: partners pass through small cone gates, moving to new gates as they go.
• Activity 2 – Turn & Go: receive ball, turn (inside or outside of foot), dribble into space.
• Activity 3 – 2v1 to Goal: two attackers versus one defender, encouraging a pass then shot.
• Play – 3v3 / 4v4: encourage players to look for open teammates, but still allow dribbling.
Week 10 — Passing, Teamwork & Celebration
Key Cues: “Move after your pass,” “Support your teammate,” “Have fun.”
